Two cases of Vibrio cholerae non-O1/non-O139 septicaemia with favourable outcome in Lebanon.

چکیده
Vibrio cholerae species can be divided into 2 major groups: cholera-causing strains of the serogroups O1 and O139, and non-O1 V. cholerae (NOVC) [1]. Non-O1 V. cholerae (NOVC) typically does not elaborate cholera toxin. It is also antigenically distinct from the V. cholerae O1 and O139 strains, which cause epidemic cholera in many countries. Although NOVC strains are usually associated with sporadic diarrhoea, some outbreaks have been reported. These strains have also been associated with skin infections, cholecystitis, meningitis and septicaemia. While gastrointestinal infections caused by NOVC usually have a favourable outcome, invasive infections may be fatal [2]. Immunocompromised patients, particularly those with hepatic cirrhosis or haematological malignancies, are at highest risk for septicaemia with NOVC [2,3]. In this paper, we report on 2 residents of Beirut who were diagnosed with NOVC and treated in a large public facility. They are, to our knowledge, the first reported cases of severe NOVC infection in Lebanon.

Background. The non-O1/non-O139 serogroups of Vibrio cholerae occur in diverse natural niches, and usually cause mild and self-limiting gastrointestinal illness. However, they have well-documented potential to cause invasive and extra-intestinal infections among immunocompromised patients. Furthermore, their ability to grow in low-salinity surface water, and the existence of asymptomatic human ...
متن کاملTwo Cases of Bacteriemia Caused by Nontoxigenic, Non-O1, Non-O139 Vibrio cholerae Isolates in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
The toxigenic bacterium Vibrio cholerae belonging to the O1 and O139 serogroups is commonly associated with epidemic diarrhea in tropical settings; other diseases caused by this environmental pathogen are seldom identified. Here we report two unassociated cases of nonfatal, nontoxigenic V. cholerae non-O1, non-O139 bacteremia in patients with comorbidities in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, that occ...

An occurrence of Vibrio cholerae non-O1/O139 gastroenteritis in the U.S. Gulf Coast is reported here. Genomic analysis revealed that the isolate lacked known virulence factors associated with the clinical outcome of a V. cholerae infection but did contain putative genomic islands and other accessory virulence factors. Many of these factors are widespread among environmental strains of V. choler...
متن کاملDistribution and sequence analysis of virulence associated genes in Vibrio cholerae O1, O139 and non-O1/non-O139 isolates from Thailand.
Virulence-associated genes of Vibrio cholerae including O1, O139 and non-O1/non-O139 from an outbreak in Songkhla Province and sporadic cases occurred in Thailand during 1993 - 2002 were investigated. One hundred eighty-five V. cholerae strains were examined for the presence of virulence-associated genes including ctxA, tcpA, zot, toxR, toxS, toxT, and ace by polymerase chain reaction. DNA sequ...

Vibrio cholerae, the causative agent of major epidemics of diarrheal disease in Bangladesh, South America, Southeastern Asia, and Africa, was isolated from clinical samples and from aquatic environments during and between epidemics over the past 20 years. To determine the evolutionary relationships and molecular diversity of these strains, in order to understand sources, origin, and epidemiolog...
